What is genre? According to the Cambridge Dictionary, genre refers “a style, especially in the arts, that involves a particular set of characteristics” (Cambridge Dictionary). Genre within book covers enables people to distinguish a horror from a romance story, science fiction from crime, so it is very important to get the correct book cover for the genre to reflect what the piece of work is about.
Genre today, is one of the most powerful influences in creative industries. Successful genre writers will create well-developed characters and the deep driven story; their well-designed covers also aid with drawing in the reader. However genre writing, no matter how creative and authentic, will have an underlying formula. Horror writing, for example, mainly has a female protagonist and an antagonist with a troubled past.
